Be Kind to Your Back

Back injuries can occur when we least suspect. Often times you do not notice you have suffered a back injury till days sometimes weeks after the incident. Back injuries are frequent and severe injuries that affect 50 to 70 percent of people in the United States.

Various work tasks can put strain on your back each day. You must be aware of lifting techniques to keep your back in proper working order. Injuring your back can affect other parts of your body. This can cause intense pain and even require surgery in some cases.

Back pain is commonly caused by improper lifting methods and posture. Repetitive lifting, bending and twisting can also cause back pain.

If you must lift something do it slowly and properly. Use your legs and arm muscles to lift not your back. Bend your knees and keep your back straight. Be sure to keep the object close to your body.

If the object is too heavy to lift ask for help or use a lifting device.

As we mentioned repetitive motion can also lead to back pain and injury. To help prevent this type of back injury be sure to sit and stand up straight while at work. Arrange your equipment to fit your body. This may mean adjusting your chair or putting things where you can easily reach them.

Be sure to take short breaks when you are doing a lot of lifting. If you sit for long periods of time get up and stretch your muscles.

Being healthy and active can also help you reduce injury to your back. Maintain a healthy weight and do some sort of moderate aerobic activity a couple times a week. These steps will help you keep your back in good condition.
